What to Expect

If you are considering enhancing your body contour with placement of breast implants because you are unhappy with the size and shape of your chest, it is important that you know what to expect after surgery. The breast augmentation procedure has progressed significantly in the past 10 years, leading to the development of techniques that minimize post-surgical pain, recovery time, and unwanted side effects following treatment. Breast augmentation surgery is safer than ever before and surgeons can personalize treatment and achieve more natural looking results than were previously possible.

Potential Risks

The breast augmentation procedure offers many benefits. However, patients must realize that there are risks associated with breast augmentation surgery. Early problems consist of bleeding and infection. While these problems are uncommon, they can be serious so it is important to follow postoperative instructions carefully. Late problems largely consist of scar tissue forming around the implant and implant malposition. Scar tissue formation is relatively rare and Dr. Pin will show you exercises to help minimize it. Implant malposition most frequently results when scar tissue forms early or when the implant fails to “settle” as expected. Most importantly, patients must realize that all implants, like any other man-made device, will eventually wear out and need to be removed or replaced. Patients who are not willing to accept this fact should not have breast augmentation surgery.

Recovery

Dallas breast augmentation surgeon Paul Pin performs most implant surgeries in less than an hour. The sutures used to close incisions are dissolvable and do not need to be removed at any point. Patients can shower the day after surgery if they feel up to it. However, Dr. Pin advises that patients reasonably restrict their activity for at least 48 hours after breast augmentation surgery, and not perform aerobic exercise for at least one week. Taking time off of work, school, and other commitments can greatly reduce discomfort and your chances of developing complications following the procedure.

Dr. Pin will provide you with a prescription for medication to control pain for the first few days after having your breast implants placed. The majority of our patients experience relatively easy recovery periods as long as they get plenty of rest and take pain medication as necessary.
